Miami-Dade Police Department Uses Helicopter to Locate Missing Person Second SafetyNet Service-Related Rescue in Florida in Two Days Earlier this afternoon, the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Aviation Unit was involved in their first missing person rescue using the SafetyNet Tracking service. An 85-year-old man suffering from Alzheimer’s and diabetes was reported missing by his wife after the man went to get the newspaper outside his home. When he did not return, his wife contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department and officers responded to the couple’s home. The police department’s helicopter was deployed shortly thereafter and approximately 15 minutes after liftoff, a signal from the missing person’s SafetyNet bracelet was identified. The signal was at its strongest near the BJ’s Wholesale Club on Kendall Drive and S.W. 162nd Avenue in Miami. Ground units were advised and responded to the area, where the missing person was located approximately two miles away from his home in good condition. He was then transported home. This was the second rescue in Florida involving the SafetyNet service in two days. Friday’s rescue involved the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and a 40-year-old man with dementia who went missing and was located 1.1 miles away from his home – only 37 minutes after deputies from the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office arrived on scene. The SafetyNet Tracking service is designed to assist public safety agencies find individuals with cognitive conditions who are prone to wandering and becoming lost. The service is comprised of a SafetyNet Bracelet worn by a client that emits Radio Frequency signals, which can be tracked by local public safety officials via their SafetyNet Search and Rescue Receivers.
